Two tankers alongside at anchor during a J LINE ship-to-ship transfer

Ship-to-ship operations

Crude oil ship-to-ship transfer

A VLCC lightering or a tanker-to-tanker transfer moves large cargo values between hulls of very different sizes. The margin for error lives in the mooring plan, the fender arrangement and the weather window.

The challenge

What a large transfer depends on

Freeboard differences change through the operation as cargo moves. Fender positions, mooring line loads and hose handling have to be planned for the start, the middle and the end of the transfer — not just the moment the vessels come alongside.

Questions

Before you ask

J LINE Shipping is a maritime solutions company specialising in ship-to-ship (STS) operations, supported by flag registration and seafarer documentation, vessel inspections, and crew change, husbandry, bunkering and ship management support, for shipowners, charterers and vessel operators.

What do you need from us to plan a crude oil STS?

Vessel particulars for both ships, cargo details, the intended location and window, and any charter or terminal requirements. We confirm what else is needed after the first review.

Who decides if conditions are unsafe?

Operating limits and stop criteria are agreed in the plan before the operation. If conditions move outside them, the operation stops. Commercial urgency never overrides safety.
