Ship-to-ship operations
LPG ship-to-ship transfer
Transferring liquefied gas between a fully refrigerated VLGC and a pressurised carrier is one of the least forgiving STS operations at sea. Temperature, pressure, compatibility and vapour handling all have to be resolved before the vessels meet.
The challenge
Where gas transfers go wrong
Most difficulties in LPG STS are decided before the approach: an incompatible manifold arrangement, a cargo temperature the receiving vessel cannot accept, an unclear vapour return plan, or a location whose permits were assumed rather than confirmed. We work through those questions with you first.

Approach configuration
The LGC anchors. The VLGC manoeuvres alongside.
The approach line, fender positions and mooring sequence are set in the operation plan before either vessel moves.
What we cover
What's included
- 01
VLGC ↔ pressurised LPG transfers
Compatibility review of both vessels, cargo condition and the transfer and vapour arrangement.
- 02
LPG products debunkering
Safe removal of LPG products from a vessel through a planned ship-to-ship operation.
- 03
Port clearance for gas vessels
Coordination of entry and exit permits for specialised gas carriers with the relevant authorities.
- 04
Operation planning & supervision
A written plan, readiness checks and disciplined supervision from mooring to unmooring.
A gas transfer where every party knows the plan, the limits and the stop criteria before the first line goes across.
Questions
Before you ask
J LINE Shipping is a maritime solutions company specialising in ship-to-ship (STS) operations, supported by flag registration and seafarer documentation, vessel inspections, and crew change, husbandry, bunkering and ship management support, for shipowners, charterers and vessel operators.
Can a fully refrigerated VLGC transfer cargo to a pressurised LPG carrier?
Often, yes — but it depends on the receiving vessel's ability to accept the cargo temperature, the manifold and hose arrangement, and the vapour handling plan. We assess compatibility before the operation is fixed, and tell you plainly if it is not feasible as proposed.
Do you coordinate permits for gas carriers?
Yes. We coordinate port clearance and the entry and exit permits that specialised gas vessels require with the relevant local authorities.
